WES WALTERS
BORN VICTORIA 1928
VICTORIA

Wes' first group exhibition toured the Victorian regional galleries in 1974. Between 1975 and 1978 he had three one-man exhibitions. He has painted numerous commissioned portraits of well-known Australians and is represented in national and state galleries around Australia. He has won many prizes including the Archibald Prize in 1979 with his Portrait of Phillip Adams. His painting Tony, a Doug Moran National Portrait Prize 1990 finalist, is now in the National Gallery of Victoria collection.

"My main objective as a portrait painter is to paint as well as my hero, Velasquez, in my estimation by far the world's greatest portraitist. I feel this is unlikely to be brought to fruition, although sometimes there are instances when I feel I get a little closer. The search for this ideal is ongoing.

"Andrzej Janczewski, a restorer of artworks, arrived in Australia from Poland in 1983. After studying art at the Victorian College of the Arts, he established a framing studio-workshop in Richmond where his high standard of taste and workmanship and his concern for works entrusted to his care have endeared him to artists.

"The background portrait is of Wikacy, a Polish Bohemian, who was a legendary figure in the pre-war art world of Kracow, the cultural capital of Poland."
