John's art endeavours have occupied virtually his whole life and spanned the fields of advertising, art, art education and fine art. He has won many awards for painting, a number being important nationally, and has had nearly three dozen one-person exhibitions. Appointments include being in charge of Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art (1974-1984) and serving as a Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery (1969-1987). He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for his service to art by Griffith University, Queensland in 1994.
His work in the human image, landscape and abstraction is noted for both feeling and colour. Subject matter has come from areas near and far, including the Pacific Islands, Italy, Greece and Egypt and many parts of Australia.
"Verlie Just established the Town Gallery and Japan Room in Brisbane in 1973. There, apart from holding exhibitions of the works of well-known Australian artists, in the Japan Room Verlie continues to create public awareness of the ukiyo-e form. Her writings, lectures, vast reference library and exhibitions cover three centuries of Japanese woodcuts.
"As a subject she interested me with her individual dress-style.
"The manner of the work is in the ukiyo-e, that is single outline with flat planes of colour, echoing the Japanese print with which she is so closely associated.
"It is always a challenge to paint a portrait. One's painting has to be more important than a mere likeness. It should be a work of art first, then a recognition of physical features with deeper-lying qualities."
