LEWIS MILLER
BORN MELBOURNE, VICTORIA 1959
VICTORIA

Lewis studied painting at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977 to 1979, and then travelled to London, Europe and Malaysia. He currently teaches drawing part-time at RMIT. He has had six solo exhibitions since 1986 and is represented in the Australian National Gallery, state and private galleries. He has been commissioned to paint many portraits. In 1982 he won the Hugh Ramsay Portrait Prize.

"Over the past twenty years or so I have made many attempts at self-portraiture, especially at times, when wanting to paint a head, I have had only my own at hand, so to speak.

"I have not, however, until recently tried a full-length, close to life-size figure of myself.

"The experience was quite interesting and required the use of two mirrors. This is because when I look at the image in one mirror I see a complete reverse of what I really look like. I constantly referred to the reverse image of the painting in progress. This is a technique many painters use in all types of picture making."
