ROBERT JUNIPER
BORN WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1929
WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Robert studied commercial art and industrial design in England and, returning to Western Australia in 1948, painted and taught. He held his first exhibition in 1953, has had one-man shows in major Australian cities each year since 1962 and in Japan in 1964. He has won many awards and is represented in all state public galleries. In 1957 he helped to form the Perth Group with Guy Grey Smith, Brian McKay and Tom Gibbons. In the eighties he began to explore other media - he designed stained glass windows for churches, sets for theatre and ballet productions and a tapestry which hangs in Parliament House, Western Australia. In 1992 he was commissioned to produce sculpture and the coat of arms for the Commonwealth Law Courts in Perth.

Recognised as an artist of poetic and spontaneous vision, Robert is best known for his evocative depictions of the Western Australian landscape. His art has earned him national and international recognition and many awards and honours, including an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Western Australia in 1984, for his contribution to contemporary Australian art.

"I have painted well-known artist John Olsen.

"I have been aware of his work for thirty years or so and have known him personally for about twenty. I have a deal of respect for him and his painting. He is erudite and intelligent, and in my opinion, one of the three or four best painters of his generation, a wonderful 'marks man'.

"I think we must have been aware at the same time of the Japanese master poet Basho's lovely haiku,

'Breaking the silence of an ancient pond
the frog jumped,
a resounding resonance'

"The frog is to him a talisman, or totem, if you wish."
